Protect Your Skin and the Planet…It’s a Win-Win

If you are wondering what the difference between World Environmental Day (June 5th) and Earth Day (April 22) is, you’re not alone. The simple answer is not much. Both are designed to celebrate the planet and bring awareness to protecting it—after all it’s the only one we’ve got! Speaking of which, your skin is the only protective layer you have. So, in honor of World Environmental Day this week, we’d like to share a few easy ideas to protect our beautiful bold planet and your beautiful bold skin.

Four Ideas to Keep our Planet and Your Skin Healthy

1. Select Organic Products

Pesticides are by their very nature destructive to the environment and have been implicated in all sorts of health issues, as well as the severely declining bee population. Organic ingredients are grown without the use of these harmful chemicals and in turn are a more natural and friendly to both the earth and our bodies.

2. Say No to Petro

Products containing petrochemicals aren’t good for your skin or the environment.  Petroleum-based ingredients have the effect of forming a clingfilm-like barrier to the skin that stops the pores from breathing and releasing toxins.  It is also a non-renewable resource, need we say more?

3. Avoid Phthalates

Phthalates are commonly found in beauty product packaging and may leak into the product. The controversy behind phthalates—which give plastic its flexible quality—is that it is placed in polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is a carcinogen (a substance capable of causing cancer in living tissue) when heated up. The physical characteristics impact on even the smallest of creatures are a growing concern to the environment.

4. Avoid Products Containing Triclosan – Commonly Found in Hand Wash

Triclosan (found in toothpaste and hand washes) when washed down the drain, can react with sunlight to form dioxins—a highly toxic compound that is a serious and persistent environmental pollutant.  Look for natural antimicrobial and antiseptic action form ingredients instead, such as those found in Viroshield products.
